‘Thursday’s Child’ by Nicci French (Frieda Klein # 4)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Note: Some editions of this book are titled Thursday’s Children.

The story of the brilliant and solitary London psychotherapist Frieda Klein continues with this fourth instalment and delves into Frieda’s past once again. This time there is a specific connection to the present as she returns to her childhood home of Braxton. This series is very readable and feels like watching British crime on Netflix.

Frieda’s case starts when a former classmate appears at Frieda’s door, begging for her help. Maddie Capel’s teenage daughter Becky, claims that she was raped in her own bed one night while her mother was downstairs. Her assailant warned, “Don’t think of telling anyone, sweetheart. Nobody will believe you.” Becky’s story awakens dark memories of an eerily similar incident in Frieda’s own past. When Becky is found hanging from a beam in her bedroom, Frieda sets out to find the man she believes is both her rapist and Becky’s killer.

For further content on this series, and the husband and wife team who wrote it (Nicci Gerrard & Sean French), check out the links below. Although the series begins on Monday and goes through Sunday, there is one more in the series at the end which has no weekday in the title. That can be a bit confusing. There is a disturbing mystery that runs through the whole series that is ramping up and will not be resolved until the eighth book finale called Day of the Dead.

  1. Excellent series… very easy to binge on this as we are very eager to follow Frieda Klein’s sleuthing. Her personal story is also engrossing. Highly recommend.

    • Thanks for the endorsement Karen! I am tempted to read nothing but this series till the end, but I also kind of like coming back to the familiar while interspersing it with other reads. Josef is such an enjoyable character as well, and provides some much needed comic relief! 🙂
