‘Bear Necessity’ by James Gould-Bourn

Thanks Nancy! for sending me this title that you said you picked up because of the charming cover! It’s an uplifting, fresh and funny, life affirming, and heartwarming debut novel about a father and son in trying times, and I absolutely loved it!

Danny’s life is falling apart. Not only has he become a single father, his eleven-year old son Will has not spoken a word since his mother was killed in a car crash a year earlier. Now Danny has lost his job and his landlord is putting on the pressure for the rent. Danny is going to have to get creative! There are some colourful characters in this story (with colourful language to match) but I didn’t mind a bit. In the UK this title is called Keeping Mum.

The author is from Manchester but is living in Malaysia. He used to work in organisations removing landmines in Africa and the Middle East. He decided to enrol in the Faber Academy’s six-month ‘Write a Novel’ course in London, and that he did, very successfully it seems. I’m looking forward to more from this author!

  1. Every now and again judging a book by the cover works out. Maybe you should hold a Best Book Cover contest
