‘The Guest List’ by Lucy Foley

Rating: 3 out of 5.

“Everyone on the island has a secret. Everyone has a motive. And someone won’t leave this wedding alive.”

This book has been on many bestseller lists as well as top choice in the Mystery & Thriller category (Goodreads 2020). I thought it might be perfect for listening to on audio while driving across country, and it was. The audio version has a variety of authentic voices that were nicely done.

A glamorous exclusive celebrity wedding on a remote island, is the perfect sort of locked room setting for a murder mystery thriller–Agatha Christie style. The author spends as much time and care setting up all the characters (and the multiple red herrings), as the wedding planner spends arranging place settings and perfecting the menu. The action and suspense are always just lurking beneath the surface, with both victim and culprit not revealed until the very end. There are plenty of surprises in store.

Reviews are mixed on this title, some find it awful, and others amazing. One likened it to a mix between Agatha Christie and tabloid gossip. I’m quite sure this book will be adapted to the screen at some point, it’s very atmospheric, if a bit dark.

Content warning: if bad language is problematic for you, you might want to pass on this one and there are some truly nasty characters with very bad behaviour that may be offensive and triggering.
