‘The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times’ by Michelle Obama

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“I don’t believe there are tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big problems.”

Hard work, perseverance, living with uncertainty, self-worth wrapped in vulnerability, being open to learning and changing: these are just a few of the things that Obama mentions in this second memoir about what helped her face the challenges of living a life she never imagined she would have. Michelle is a goal setter, but being the First Lady was never something she aspired to. In fact, she had an opportunity to say no to Barack running for president and she almost did. But she knew in her heart that supporting her husband in this venture would be important not only for him, but for the country and the world as well.

Her candour and good humour about many things is refreshing and I especially loved reading about what she learned from her mother and father that helped her in parenting her two daughters Sasha and Melia. There’s some insight into what daily life in the White House was like for them as a family, as well as wisdom about life in general. She even talks about knitting!

This book follows on seamlessly from her first memoir called Becoming. Although, the first book does give more background into her childhood and years before she met Barack, it is not a prerequisite read. This one focuses mostly on their time in the White House, but she includes backstory as necessary.

The New York Times has an excellent, fuller review written by Judith Newman: click here.

The print edition includes lots of photos and the audio version is narrated by the author herself.

  1. I gave this to my daughter-in-love for Christmas and am eager to hear what she thinks about it. I loved Becoming and so admire her–and her husband.
