‘Talking to Canadians’ by Rick Mercer

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Public figures are notoriously quiet about their private lives, until the memoir comes out, and then they want everyone to buy it and read it! 🙂

Fans of Canadian comedian, TV personality, and political satirist Rick Mercer will love this funny and heartfelt romp through his life and career. There is information about his Newfoundland upbringing, his personal life with partner Gerald Lunz, as well as behind-the-scenes glimpses into popular shows like This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Talking to Americans, Rick Mercer Report, and Made in Canada. I listened to the audio book which, narrated by the author, made it feel like one of those glorious extended rants that he is famous for.

Mercer is a gifted storyteller, sharp and witty. He is skilled at keeping a straight face through even the most hilarious political satire. Here are two of my all-time favourite short clips of Mercer in action:

Bungee jumping with Rick Hansen, and a collage of interviews from Talking to Americans segments (with all due respect to the many knowledgeable Americans I know and love)!

  1. I have loved Rick Mercer forever! I remember both these episodes. Another favourite is when Rick skinny dipped with Bob Rae. I’ll definitely check out his memoir. Thanks, Joanne!
