‘Still Laughing, Still Learning (Still Looking for a Good Title): Mostly True Stories of Family, Friends, Faith & Foibles’ by Bill Chadwick

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Bill’s stories find resiliency in a collective consciousness, in belonging. Through his encounters with parishioners, family members, and total strangers, we discover that vulnerability leads to compassion and kindness, a place of grace. He understands that grace can be less a touch with the divine and more a recognition of the divine in the everyday, in finding the solace in the mystery when it seems there is no lamp to follow. Kevin Kling, Foreword.

Just the title and cover photo of this book are worth the price of admission…I was lucky to be gifted the book by the author himself, in person. Full disclosure–Bill is related to long-time friends of ours. Now, honestly, it can be tricky to review a book written by someone you know, for obvious reasons, but in this case I am prepared to give the author full marks and say with all sincerity…I loved it! Stories matter and make a difference.

His writing has been described as being in the style of Robert Fulghum and Anne Lamott. He shares engaging life/love affirming short stories (about himself and others) grouped roughly into themes. He’s a comedic storyteller, down to earth, and doesn’t take himself too seriously. He’s been around the block, has paid thoughtful attention along the way, and shares some stuff he’s learned from being a Presbyterian pastor, chaplain, and social justice activist (as well as a son, father, husband etc).

I love how he promotes laughter and being a lifelong learner. And no, I did not come up with a better title (sorry Bill) because the one you have is perfect.
