‘The Midnight Library’ by Matt Haig

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Between life and death there is a library. When Nora Seed finds herself in the Midnight Library, she has a chance to make things right. Up until now, her life has been full of misery and regret. She feels she has let everyone down, including herself. But things are about to change.

The Midnight Library is a creative magical adventure. It’s a clever experience in perspective. It’s one of those books that the less you know when you start reading, the better it is. So I am reluctant to say too much about the story line, except that it is easy to follow, intriguing, and up-lifting. If you know it’s about depression and suicide you might think it’s a dark book, but that’s the thing about Haig. The story might be a little sad, but in the end, you feel better after reading it. It’s the realisation that being human gets messy sometimes, but it’s in the mess that we see what matters.

Matt Haig is swiftly becoming one of my favourite authors. I love his ability to keep the writing real, simple, entertainingly creative, darkly honest (but leavened with humour), and wise in ‘hard-won’ perspective. Both fiction books I’ve read (The Humans and this one) as well has his non-fiction book Reasons to Stay Alive, deal with depression and anxiety. He writes from an authentic place on this topic because he’s been there himself. I appreciate his honesty and vulnerability and his focus on self-acceptance. He says it was creative writing that improved his mental health, and in the process he has blessed us with thought provoking and life affirming books.

  1. I usually read Haig’s non-fictions as I often find novels hard to get through but The Midnight Library had so many great reviews I had to give it a go and I loved it..The simplicity of his writing made it such an easy read but with so much poignancy.
Just discovered your blog and so impressed with how many books you get through a year!

    • Thanks for visiting the blog Angie! I’m glad you like The Midnight Library. I’m actually a slow reader, but steady. It’s surprising how many books you can actually get through with a regular reading time, even if it’s short. Of course life does still get in the way of reading at times…:)
