‘Things I Learned from Knitting…whether I wanted to or not’ by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee

Rating: 4 out of 5.

If there is a knitter in your life or you are a knitter yourself, this book is for you! I found a copy at the library but it might make a nice little gift too–very relatable to anyone who has picked up a pair of needles.

It’s a hilarious little volume that speaks of the perils and pitfalls commonly associated with being addicted to knitting, and things to be learned from knitting in general.

It addresses some age-old mysteries like:

  • why knitters often have two or twenty projects on the go at once
  • why they usually make sweaters for 2 year olds, rather than babies
  • why they have the patience and resolve to pick back huge sections of knitting when a mistake has been made (or not)
  • why every knitter will admit to throwing projects across the room, hiding them in the back of closet, or (heaven forbid!) sneaking a failed project into the garbage can or donation bin…but after all that, they just keep right on knitting!!??!!
Yup! I’m a knitter too!

The therapeutic benefits of mindless repetition and the brain tease stimulation of puzzling out patterns, are well documented. Not to mention, there’s the sheer joy of making something beautiful with your hands!

The best part about the author Stephanie (besides being very funny)–she’s Canadian!! If you love this book (or any of her others), be sure to visit her blog with the intriguing name Yarn Harlot. It’s worth a visit. 🙂 Here’s a fun event Stephanie organised in NYC years ago–it captures her love for the knitting community so well.

  1. Oooh, I had forgotten about this wonderful writer and knitter and her blog, thank you for the re-introduction. Knitter here, too – love your sweater!

    • Thanks Cheryl! Stephanie has been around for a long time, I’m not sure how I missed her until now! Always fun to connect with other knitters/readers. What have you been knitting lately?

  2. Just cast on a summer tee with raglan sleeves in a gorgeous pure silk – meant to be a quick project for this season, but now it’s September. So it goes. What do you have on needles now?

    • That sounds great Cheryl! Is it the pattern Stephanie had on her blog? I’ve still got the same sweater and sock on my needles, trying hard to avoid ‘startitis’ and not start a new project until my sweater is done!
