‘Oops Pounce Quick Run!: An Alphabet Caper’ by Mike Twohy

Rating: 5 out of 5.

(Age 4 – 8) This Geisel Honor winning children’s picture book is such a fun story-based alphabet book. It’s easy to make early alphabet and opposite books boring but Twohy adds an epic chase and this clever story takes off. The alphabet comes along for the ride! The dog-and-mouse conflict over a ball is so funny and the illustrations are lively and expressive. It’s really nice that not all of the alphabet words are nouns.

(Age 4 – 8) ‘Stop, Go, Yes, No!: A Story of Opposites’ is another one for the youngest of children that features a creative dog and cat chase. Again, the humour is such fun for kids and adults alike, and the opposites are not the usual ones.

(Age 4 – 8) ‘Mouse and Hippo’ is all about the challenges of portrait painting, especially when there is a big hippo and a tiny mouse involved! The ensuing ‘perspectives’ are hilarious.
