‘Hostage’ by Clare Mackintosh

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While we were all staying home and restricted from flying, apparently three authors were busy writing suspense thrillers that could also have kept us grounded by anxiety!

The one I read is from a favourite author of mine, Clare Mackintosh. It’s an Agatha Christie ‘locked-room thriller.’ With a murderer on board, it’s every traveller’s worst nightmare. The flight is the inaugural 20 hour long haul from London to Sydney. Mina is trying to focus on her job as a flight attendant, not the problems of her five-year-old daughter back home, or the fissures in her marriage. But the plane has barely taken off when Mina receives a chilling note from an anonymous passenger, someone intent on ensuring the plane never reaches its destination. Someone needs Mina’s assistance and knows exactly how to make her comply.

Even though I am a fan of this author, this wasn’t my favourite of hers and not always believable. But it is an easy-to-read tense page-turner as we have come to expect from Mackintosh.

The book does read like a crime series episode but also dips into some issues like adoption and attachment disorder.

The author is a former police officer and does her research well, in this case in a flight simulator! Of course ethical dilemmas and difficult decisions abound. The final reveal is the real kicker this time, so keep your seat belt buckled, and hang in there till the end!

  1. Totally agree with Joanne’s assessment. Surprising and unbelievable at the same time, this book nevertheless keeps you engaged and concerned. Worth pursuing until the end.
