‘Breaking and Mending: A junior doctor’s stories of compassion and burnout’ by Joanna Cannon

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A favourite British fiction writer of mine, also happens to be a medical doctor/psychiatrist. Marry writing and medicine and you get magic. This thoughtful and brutally honest insight into one doctor’s struggle with the healthcare system is beautifully written, riveting, and compassionate.

Even though it was published just before the pandemic started, it is even more relevant now after COVID 19 has exposed cracks and fissures in healthcare systems everywhere.

Joanna Cannon poignantly shares stories of her journey through medical school, residency, and into the first couple of years after she graduated and became a medical doctor. She beautifully recounts her struggle in balancing compassion for patients with her own self-care, given the demands of the medical profession.

This book was every bit as compelling to me as her fiction novels, which I have loved. My favourites are: The Trouble with Goats and Sheep and Three Things About Elsie.
