‘The Truths We Hold: An American Journey’ by Kamala Harris

What has disturbed me most lately as I listen to the news and watch politics is what some have described as “truth decay.” There’s a lot of lying going on by some pretty high profile people which seems to make the sharing of false information seem ok. But it’s not ok, and it’s refreshing to hear that speaking truth is still upheld as important enough to be the focus of a memoir.

Who is Kamala Harris? I didn’t know much about her so I enjoyed listening to the story of her upbringing, her personal life, and her career so far. Senator Harris’s commitment to speaking truth is informed by her upbringing. The daughter of immigrants, she was raised in an Oakland, California community that cared deeply about social justice. Professionally her career has been marked by a passion for justice. She has been dedicated to being an advocate for the vulnerable and is not afraid to call out injustice when she encounters it. Professionally she has a good understanding of the judicial system and systemic problems within it.

What she communicates as her vision for an America that is severely fragmented and divided, is striving to achieve more of a sense of shared struggle, shared purpose, and shared values. She comes across as confident, articulate and sensible. Her story is interesting and inspirational and I look forward to seeing more of her as she takes on the task of Vice President in the Biden administration in 2021. I listened to the audio version which Harris narrates herself.
