‘I Guess I Haven’t Learned that Yet: Discovering New Ways of Living When the Old Ways Stop Working’ by Shauna Niequist

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Change is the only constant in our lives. Of course the change we choose is usually easier and more refreshing than the hard change that is unexpected and involves loss.

No matter what the change, navigating it involves self-awareness, curiosity, self-compassion, and an attitude of gratitude. Of course there’s an element of healing and recovery as well, if changes are challenging. Being open to learning new things, building new routines, and appreciating the benefits of a new season are fundamentally critical, and that is what Shauna Niequist talks about in this book.

When she moved with her husband and two children to New York City, Shauna put the quote that is the title of this book on the wall in their new apartment. It helped them put things in perspective during a time of transition.

Shauna Niequist is a person of faith and writes encouraging books by sharing honest insights from her own life to bless others.

My favourite books of hers so far are Present Over Perfect where she talks about the dangers of perfectionism, and Bread and Wine where she highlights the importance of hospitality, community, and the joys and comforts of sharing food, including recipes I still use to this day.

Meet Shauna and her family in this video. It’s worth a listen.
