‘Once Upon a Pandemic: A Pregnancy Journey’ by Dr. Sheila Wijayasinghe and illustrated by Anna Despina Koprantzelas

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Parents know that it’s never clear what to expect when you are expecting, even after reading ‘how-to’ books with those words right in the title. But parents who were pregnant and had babies during the pandemic, were challenged in many additional ways!

The uncertainty and fear, things like solo ultrasounds and midwife visits when the partner was not allowed in and had to hear a first heartbeat on Facetime, isolation from family and friends and grandparents, and even in some cases cross-country pickups of babies born to surrogate mothers–these were all unexpected extra challenges during a time that is hopefully special and miraculous, but can also be stressful. Not being able to share in person with others during a significant time of life has been the bane of the pandemic for all of us in some way, but it is especially true for new parents. How these parents found resilience and made it through was by strength, dedication, perseverance and love and this book honours their journey.

Beautifully written and illustrated, this gem is the perfect gift for someone who you know who had a baby or became pregnant, or welcomed a child into their family during the pandemic.
