‘Copper River’ by William Kent Krueger (Cork O’Connor # 6)

Rating: 2 out of 5.

This is a murder mystery series that I have been enjoying, but this instalment and the one before it (Mercy Falls # 5) have been my least favourite so far. Because Mercy Falls doesn’t finish and carries on into # 6, the two are linked. Both dealt not only with murders but abuse as well, and I found that difficult to read.

It’s hard for me to comment on what I didn’t like without spoilers, so I’ll just say I found the pacing slow with too much backstory, and the resolution at the end too rushed and easy to be believable. I will definitely carry on with the series because I do enjoy the character of Cork O’Connor and the setting of Minnesota, the Boundary Waters, and the Great Lakes region. In this one Cork is on the run and discovers a murderous scheme that involves teenagers and a wild cat. 😮

I have found Krueger’s writing to be superior in his stand-alone novels Ordinary Grace and This Tender Land. I am looking forward to reading his new one called The River We Remember.

It was interesting to learn that apparently Krueger has written the books of this series in the same coffee shop on St. Clair in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Worth a visit next time I’m in the area!
