‘Over in the Meadow’ by Jan Thornhill

Rating: 5 out of 5.

So begins the classic nursery poem, written by Olive Wadsworth in the late 19th century. It has become a favourite counting rhyme for generations of children. The additional fun in this children’s picture book are the creative illustrations which send the reader on a delightful “I Spy” hunt to find common objects.

All of the pictures in the book were created on a computer using photographs of everyday items like cutlery, pretzels, fruits, vegetables and tools. Many of the objects have been made bigger or smaller or have had their colour changed. But once you get the idea of the book, it becomes like an amazing adventure in discovering hidden objects in the artwork. It’s ingenious and endlessly fascinating!

There is a helpful five-page picture guide at the end of the book to assist in finding them all. So enjoy reading the book, and when you reach the glossary you can head back and enjoy discovering things like broccoli trees, a pretzel beaver dam, and avocado frogs!
