‘Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted’ by Suleika Jaouad

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This book might resonate with anyone whose life has been interrupted or become different than hoped or expected.

I found this to be an immersive memoir of a young woman’s journey through illness and recovery and self-discovery. She traces key moments from her diagnosis of leukaemia to remission right through to re-entry into ‘normal’ life, assuming that’s even possible.

The author draws us into intimate and vulnerable moments within her relationships, sorting through medical decisions, coping with pain and isolation, dealing with doubts and fears, making missteps, experiencing triumphs and gratitude as well as regrets, discovering the joy of having a pet, and even embarking on a road trip across the country! Dreaming of becoming a journalist before she got sick, Suleika was given the opportunity to share her journey in a column she wrote for the The New York Times. Her chronicle captured the hearts and minds of countless readers.

What I appreciate about her writing is that she resists the temptation to impart any wisdom or draw universal conclusions about what she has learned. She simply tells her story and the reader can take away whatever is useful to them. I listened to the audio book, which the author narrates herself and it gave the book a personal touch.
