‘The Personal Librarian’ by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is a historical fiction about the life of Belle da Costa Greene, someone totally unknown to me. She was an intriguing personal librarian hired by J.P. Morgan to catalogue, curate, and collect rare manuscripts for the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York.

It might sound boring until you realise that through all of her hard work, creative skill, and extensive knowledge, she also walked a powerful but tricky line in her work and in her life, because of a dangerous secret she kept. Whether you agree with the controversial choices this woman made or not, learning of her life would make for an interesting book club discussion and I must say her story fascinated me. The authors write well and made this little-known character come alive!
