‘Good Morning Zoom: A Parody’ by Lindsay Rechler, pictures by June Park

Happy New Year Everyone!

Let me take this threshold moment to say how much I love having you all along on this journey of reading! Whether you managed to read less or more during the last year is never the point. Our reading life ebbs and flows with our situation. No pressure. It’s all good. Enjoy what you can, and let the rest go. I’m not a fan of reading challenges or New Year’s resolutions, that kind of motivation usually fails me, but if it works well for you, go for it! We are all different in our reading choices and what books work for us (or don’t).

What I love is the discussion and feedback, reflecting how unique we all are as individuals in our reading lives. Book discussion helps us appreciate various viewpoints and that can enrich the reading experience. That’s why book clubs are so satisfying, even when we disagree. So on we go into 2021 hoping our book clubs can once again be in-person events instead of on Zoom! I’m exceedingly grateful for connective technology during this pandemic, but I love how this book captures both the joys and the pitfalls of our 2020 Zoom experience.

This parody of a favourite children’s book (Goodnight Moon) can keep us smiling now, in the dark month of January–or maybe eventually (hopefully) be a book that we can file away on the shelf with our history books. Then in the future we can pull it out and remind ourselves about how things were in 2020, sharing a nod and a chuckle. From cheering on our health heroes and saying hi to loved ones over video chat, it shows us resilience in challenging times and how we can find joy in small things. Although I have a feeling working from home will continue to be a thing in the workplace going forward.

For a CTV article focusing on how the book came about, click here. The author’s net proceeds from the first printing of 100,000 copies will be donated to COVID-19 relief charities. There’s also a Goodnight Zoom parody by Andy Ankowski, but I liked this Good Morning one better.

  1. Happy New Year, Joanne. I agree, book clubs are great ways to challenge ourselves to read outside our comfort zone. Thank you for the titles you’ve suggested that have challenged and stretched me :)! Thanks also for the great book blog!

  2. Hi Wilma – Happy New Year!
Good Morning Zoom — really neat how they match the rythm and feel of the original classic. Txs for sharing.
