‘The Golden Spoon’ by Jessa Maxwell

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A manor in the countryside. A TV series baking tent. Six contestants and two show hosts. What could possible go wrong? 🙂

When production for the tenth season of the hit cooking competition Bake Week begins at the gothic estate of the show’s host and founder, celebrity chef Betsy Martin, everything seems normal. The six contestants are eager to prove their culinary talents over the course of five days. But as the baking competition gets under way, things begin to go awry, and when someone shows up dead, suddenly everyone is a suspect.

If you are looking for a fun and easy read, look no further–this debut whodunit is a cozy mystery set in a gothic manor, complete with a dark and stormy night. The baking show setting made it feel light, fresh, and delectable. The author employed a technique I love in a mystery–for most of the book you don’t know who the murderer is of course, but in this case you also don’t know who the murder victim is! If you are an Agatha Christie fan or enjoyed reading The Maid by Nita Prose, this may be for you.
