This second instalment follows seamlessly from the series debut Nothing Ventured. Poor William continues to dedicate himself to being the best detective he can be, but inevitably runs into obstacles. This time in addition to the world of art, police work, and court trials, there may even be a ‘bent copper’ in the mix.
There’s nothing very deep in this series, compared to some others like Louise Penny, but it’s a fun and easy read for the summer! I’m reading it in print now, but if you are an audio book user, this lends itself well to listening because the voices are very entertaining!
William has been promoted to Detective Sergeant, but his promotion means that he, along with the rest of the team, have been reassigned to the Drugs Squad which is challenging. Miles Faulkner is a gleeful, slippery thief who continues to wreak havoc in the lives of others while escaping any major consequences. The biggest thieves are the holy grail for any detective, but also are notoriously difficult to catch. William devises a clever trap to catch one of them, that involves being ‘hidden in plain sight.’
Still lots of loose ends dangling at the end of this one, leading right into the next volume called Turn a Blind Eye.
