‘Nothing Ventured’ by Jeffrey Archer (William Warwick # 1)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

For fans of British crime series (like Nicci French’s Frieda Klein) or Line of Duty TV series, here’s something worth reading or listening to. We like to listen to books while driving and we were getting tired of some of the thrillers we were finding. This series is a bit different. Yes, there is crime and tragedy of course, but the Brits do crime so much more smoothly, discreetly, and more cleverly, don’t they? I loved all the characters in this book, even if they’re not so well developed–they are flawed and real, and a pleasure to get to know.

It’s not so much a detective story as it is a story about the making of a detective. William Warwick (pronounced: war-rick, no second ‘w’) has always wanted to be a detective, and decides, much to his father’s dismay, that rather than become a lawyer like his father, Sir Julian Warwick QC, and his sister Grace, he will join London’s Metropolitan Police Force. This instalment features William’s early mentor Constable Fred Yates who keeps a watchful eye on William as he starts out. It’s about an art history theft that leads to both success and setbacks for William.

From Goodreads: “This new series introduces William Warwick, a family man and a detective who will battle throughout his career against a powerful criminal nemesis. Through twists, triumph and tragedy, this series will show that William Warwick is destined to become one of Jeffrey Archer’s most enduring legacies.”

In addition to this new series, Archer has others as well. I do remember the Kane & Abel series from years ago. Click on the links below to discover more. The next title in the William Warwick series is called Hidden in Plain Sight. I really loved the voices in the audio version, but I’m now finishing in print, and that’s good too.
